Confidential Handling of Client Information

All information you provide to our firm is handled with the highest level of care and discretion. Access to your personal and financial information is limited to authorized members of our firm who require it to perform the services you have engaged us to provide. We do not disclose your information to third parties without your express written consent, except where disclosure is required by law. For example, if a lender or other third-party requests copies of your tax returns or related records, we will obtain your written authorization before releasing any information. This ensures your data is shared only when you have provided clear and informed consent.

Understanding Confidentiality and Advisor-Client Privilege

While all information you provide is treated as confidential, it is important to understand the legal distinction between confidentiality and privileged communications.

Information shared with us for tax return preparation is confidential within our firm but is not protected from disclosure to the IRS. Advisor-client privilege is limited in scope and generally applies only to non-criminal tax advice related to matters before the IRS or non-criminal tax proceedings in federal courts.

Tax return preparation engagements do not fall under advisor-client privilege. If you anticipate discussing sensitive matters that may require legal protection, we encourage you to notify us so we can discuss whether consultation with an attorney is appropriate.

Annual Privacy Statement

In accordance with regulations issued by the Federal Trade Commission, tax preparation firms are required to provide an annual privacy policy disclosure. This Privacy Policy serves as our annual statement and outlines how we collect, protect, and handle your information in compliance with applicable laws and professional standards. If you have any questions regarding our privacy practices, please contact our office at (805) 778-1858 or garryajones@jonescpa.net.
